HCVP Family Self-Sufficiency Program
The Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS) assists families and individuals enrolled in the Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly Section 8 Rental Assistance) to reach their goals and become economically independent.
Whether you are interested in returning to school, finding work, advancing in your current job, changing careers, or locating needed services for your family, this program can be beneficial to you.
Once you are receiving rental assistance through the Housing Choice Voucher Program you will be referred to the FSS Program Coordinator, who will explain the details of the program to you, and how you and your family can benefit from the resources available in reaching your goals. You and your Coordinator will be in touch regularly to review your progress and identify any other needs you may have.
While you are working, and as your income increases, an Escrow (savings) account will be set aside for you by HUD which will accrue over time and at the end of the Contract you will receive the entire Escrow amount to use for whatever your family needs, down payment on a home, a new car, etc.
You are required to take a 3-hour Financial Literacy course and be working full-time making better than minimum wage to graduate from FSS. You do not have to be enrolled in FSS in order to receive rental assistance but most of our customers enroll because its a win-win situation for them to have a savings account that HUD puts money into for you.
