What is the First Time Home Buyer Program?

Anyone who is thinking about buying a home for the first time, should become educated about the process. It is easy to sign on the dotted line and make promises about paying your monthly mortgage payment, but do you really understand what you have committed yourself to?

The Quaranta Housing Services Center of Opportunities for Chenango, Inc. offers Financial Literacy and First Time Homebuyer Education classes, free of charge (there is a slight fee for the materials) on a monthly basis. These classes are for anyone thinking about buying a home of their own. Housing counselors offer the following information in group classes:

Depending on current funding, there may be a variety of grants available to assist with down payment and closing cost assistance associated with the purchase of a home. Funding is determined by various factors such as income, credit worthiness and the availability of grant funds. Submitting an application is the first step to determining eligibility.

What other programs might be helpful to me?

Revolving Loan Funds & Loan Packaging

Low-interest loans for down payments, closing costs, repairs, and help securing USDA loans for purchases/repairs.

Rehabilitation & Repair

Grants available to homeowners/homebuyers focusing on high-priority items such as wells, septic systems, electrical, heating and structural repairs.

Weatherization & Energy Management

A variety of programs designed to assist home owners, renters and landlords with weatherization and energy issues.

Employer-Assisted Home Buyer Program

OFC, Inc. partners with local employers to enhance their employee home buyer programs. (Check with your employer)

Credit Repair Counseling

Individuals work with counselors and creditors to get spending under control, reduce debt and repair credit ratings.

HCVP Family Self-Sufficiency

Assists families and individuals enrolled in the Housing Choice Voucher Program in reaching their goals and becoming economically independent.
