Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
The Chenango Regional EITC Partnership supports low to moderate income households in our region through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), Financial Fitness education and counseling, and asset building opportunities in our community.
The Chenango Regional EITC Partnership consists of Opportunities for Chenango, Inc. (via Quaranta Housing Services), United Way, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Colgate University, Morrisville State College, AARP tax-aide, Farm Bureau, five regional financial institutions, and the IRS local territory office.
The partnership formed in the fall of 2004, and supported 193 families in the 2004 tax season to attain $55,951 in EITC and Child Tax Credits through voluntary income tax preparation. The partnership completed its second successful tax season in April of 2006 by supporting 305 families to attain $184,062 in EITC and Child Tax Credits through voluntary tax preparation. In the 2006 tax season (spring 2007), through the support of the 2006 HHS EITC T/TA grant, the Partnership supported 499 families throughout the region to attain $296,429 in EITC and Child Tax Credits. At the close of the 2007 tax season our partnership supported nearly 600 families to attain more than $500,000 in tax refunds to be used in our community.
This valuable service fosters family self sufficiency through free tax preparation, electronic tax filing, financial counseling, and asset building opportunities. Much of the tax refunds attained through this initiative are spent here, supporting the economic growth and stability of our region.
